Following another blazing row with her father, King Talonite IX, Princess Aquilia is grounded. As her elder sister prepares for her marriage with Duke Falcon of the Misty Peaks, Aquilia finds herself kicking her heels, cooped up in her chamber all day while she dreams of taking to the skies on the back of her trusty Xrylion eagle, Zqeby, a gift from her late Uncle Eyrie when she was born. Her boredom knows no bounds and she is on the brink of rebelling against her father's stern command when a carrier hawk brings news of an imminent attack from the Nest of the West. Aquilia pleads with her father to be allowed to join the aerial defence squadron on Zqeby. Mentre la sorella maggiore si prepara al matrimonio con il Duca Falcon dei Picchi Nebbiosi, Aquilia si ritrova a battere i tacchi, rinchiusa nella sua camera tutto il giorno, mentre sogna di spiccare il volo sul dorso della sua fidata aquila Xrylion, Zqeby, un regalo del defunto zio Eyrie quando è nata. La sua noia non conosce limiti ed è sul punto di ribellarsi ai severi comandi del padre quando un falco portatore porta la notizia di un imminente attacco dal Nido dell'Ovest. Aquilia supplica il padre di poter entrare a far parte dello squadrone di difesa aerea su Zqeby. Il Re è irremovibile: la principessa deve rimanere nel Castello Adamantino, ma un colpo devastante lo porta a ricredersi.
